Inspired by the illustrations in the Buntús Cainte books, this cartoon brings to mind the competitiveness in Irish greetings.
‘Dia duit’ means ‘Hello’ although literally interpreted as ‘God with you’.
‘Dia is Muire duit’ means ‘Hello (back at you)’ and also, ‘God and Mary with you’.
That’s as far as it normally goes in Irish conversation, but if you want to get competitive then you can start calling the Irish saints into the conversation, starting with Patrick (Pádraig), Brigid (Bríd), and even Columba (Colmcille).
